Categories

Find the right tool for the job.

Each category covers a distinct slice of legal work — pick the one that maps to what you're trying to solve.

Legal software is a category unto itself, but “legal software” describes everything from a $20/month solo billing tool to a $500,000 enterprise e-discovery platform. The difference matters. Buying the wrong category of software — not just the wrong product within a category — is how firms waste money and implementation time.

The Owlesq directory organizes tools into eleven categories: practice management, billing and time tracking, legal research, case management, document management, document automation, contract management, client intake, e-discovery, IP management, and legal accounting. Each category reflects a distinct workflow, a distinct budget range, and a distinct buyer role. Practice management and billing are typically purchased together or as a combined platform. Legal research and contract tools are often purchased independently at the practice-group or matter level. E-discovery and IP management serve specialist workflows with their own vendor ecosystems.

If you are starting from scratch, begin with the core operational stack: practice management (or case management), billing, and document management. Everything else layers on top of that foundation. If you are evaluating a specific workflow problem — slow intake, manual contract review, inadequate time capture — start with the category page for that workflow and compare what exists there before looking across the directory broadly.
